What is schema markup?

Schema markup is code that describes what a page is about, such as an article, a product or a business, in a format search engines can read. It uses the shared vocabulary from schema.org and is usually added as a block of JSON-LD.

How it works

  1. 1

Choose what the page is about.

  2. 2

Fill in the fields. Anything you leave empty is left out of the code.

  3. 3

    Copy the generated script.

  4. 4

Paste it into your page, then check it with Google's Rich Results Test.

Which type should I choose?

  • FAQ page: a page that lists questions with their answers.
  • Article: a blog post or news story with an author and date.
  • Product: one item you sell, with a price and availability. Only add a rating if you show real customer reviews on the page.
  • Local business: a shop, office or service with a physical address.

Frequently asked questions

What is schema markup?

Schema markup is code that describes what a page is about (an article, a product, a business) in a format search engines can read. It uses the shared vocabulary from schema.org.

Which format should I use?

JSON-LD. It is the format Google recommends, and it sits in one block of code instead of being mixed into your page's visible HTML.

Will schema markup give me rich results?

It makes your page eligible for them, but search engines decide whether to show them. For example, Google now shows FAQ rich results only for a small set of sites. The markup is still valid and helps machines understand the page.

Where do I paste the code?

Inside the head of your page, or at the end of the body. In WordPress, many SEO plugins and theme settings have a field for custom code.

Does the markup have to match the page?

Yes. Only mark up content that visitors can actually see on that page. Adding ratings or reviews you do not show on the page breaks search engine guidelines.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The code is generated in your browser and nothing you type leaves your device.
