How does a word counter work?

A word counter splits your text wherever there are spaces or punctuation and counts the pieces. This one also counts characters with and without spaces, sentences and paragraphs, and estimates reading time at about 200 words per minute.

How it works

  1. 1

Type or paste your text into the box.

  2. 2

Read the live counts as you edit.

  3. 3

Check the limit bars for the place you are publishing to.

  4. 4

Use the most-used words list to spot repeated words.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a word?

Any run of letters or numbers separated by spaces or punctuation. Where the browser supports it, the tool uses built-in word detection, so Chinese and Japanese text is counted by word rather than by space.

How is reading time worked out?

It divides the word count by 200, a common average for adults reading silently. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute. Real speed varies from person to person.

What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?

Characters counts every letter, digit, space and symbol. The without-spaces figure leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks. Some limits count one way and some the other, so check which applies.

Is my text stored or sent anywhere?

No. Counting happens in your browser and your text never leaves your device.

Are the length limits exact?

They are common guides: about 60 characters for a page title and 155 for a meta description in search results, 280 for an X post. Platforms change their rules, so check before you publish.
