What are meta tags?
Meta tags are lines of HTML in a page's head that describe the page to search engines and social sites, such as its title, description and share image. They do not appear on the page itself, but they shape how it looks in search results and when shared.
How it works
- 1
Type your page title and meta description. The counters show when they are too short or too long.
- 2
Add the page address, site name and a share image.
- 3
Check the search and share previews.
- 4
Copy the tags and paste them inside the head of your page.
Writing good titles and descriptions
- Keep titles to about 50 to 60 characters. Longer titles are cut off in results. Put the most important words first.
- Keep descriptions to about 120 to 155 characters. Say what the page offers and why it is useful, in plain language.
- Make every page different. Repeating the same title and description across pages makes them harder to tell apart.
- Write for people. Stuffing in keywords reads badly and does not help.
The previews are a guide. Real results depend on the search engine, the device and what was searched for.
Frequently asked questions
What is a meta description?
A meta description is a short summary of a page, written in the page's HTML. Search engines often show it under the page title in results, so a clear one helps people decide to click.
Does the meta description affect my ranking?
Search engines say it is not a direct ranking factor. It can still change how many people click your result, which is why it is worth writing well.
Why does Google show a different title or description from mine?
Search engines may rewrite what they display when they think another part of your page matches the search better. Writing a clear, accurate title and description for each page makes a rewrite less likely.
What are Open Graph tags?
Open Graph tags tell Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and similar services which title, description and image to show when your page is shared. The X (Twitter) card tags do the same job for X.
What size should the share image be?
An image about 1200 by 630 pixels works well on most platforms. Use a full web address that starts with https.
Is anything I type sent to a server?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser, and nothing you enter leaves your device.
