How do I make a strong password?

Use a long, random password that is different for every account: at least 14 to 16 characters, made by a generator rather than chosen by hand. A password manager remembers them so you do not have to.

How it works

  1. 1

Set the length. Longer is stronger; 16 or more is a good start.

  2. 2

Choose which kinds of characters to include.

  3. 3

Press Generate again until you like the result.

  4. 4

Copy it straight into a password manager or the sign-up form.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to generate a password on a website?

It is safe here because the password is made in your browser using its secure random number generator and is never sent to a server or saved. Even so, never use a password someone else generated for you and shared.

How long should a password be?

Length matters more than clever symbols. Aim for at least 14 to 16 characters for ordinary accounts and longer for important ones such as email and banking.

What do the bits of strength mean?

It is an estimate of how many guesses an attacker would need: each extra bit doubles the work. Around 60 bits is decent, and 80 or more is very strong against guessing.

Why leave out look-alike characters?

Letters and digits such as I, l, 1, O and 0 are easy to mix up when you type a password by hand. Leaving them out helps if you ever need to read the password aloud or copy it manually.

Should I reuse a password I like?

No. If one site is breached, reused passwords let attackers try them everywhere else. Use a different password for each account, and turn on two-step verification where you can.
