What is a redirect?

A redirect automatically sends visitors and search engines from one web address to another. A permanent redirect (301 or 308) tells search engines the page has moved for good, while a temporary one (302 or 307) says it will come back.

How it works

  1. 1

Enter the address you want to check.

  2. 2

Choose whether to check as a phone.

  3. 3

Read each hop: its status code, type and time.

  4. 4

Fix any warnings, such as long chains or temporary redirects that should be permanent.

Redirect status codes

  • 301: moved permanently. Use this when a page has a new home.
  • 302: found, a temporary move.
  • 303: see other. Often used after a form submission.
  • 307: temporary redirect that keeps the request method.
  • 308: permanent redirect that keeps the request method.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a 301 and a 302 redirect?

A 301 (and 308) says a page has moved permanently, so search engines can pass the old address's ranking to the new one. A 302 (and 307) says the move is temporary, so search engines may keep the old address.

How many redirects are too many?

Ideally one, going straight to the final address. Long chains slow pages down, and browsers and search engines stop following them after a limited number of steps.

What is a redirect loop?

A loop happens when address A redirects to B and B redirects back to A. The page can never load. This tool flags it when the same address appears twice.

Does it follow JavaScript or meta refresh redirects?

No. It follows HTTP redirects only, which are the kind search engines treat as redirects. Redirects done by JavaScript or an HTML meta refresh tag are not followed.

Do you keep the results?

No. The check is made from our server, shown to you, and not stored.

Can I check any address?

You can check public web addresses. Addresses that point at private networks are refused for safety, and the number of checks per hour is limited.
