What is lorem ipsum?

Lorem ipsum is placeholder text used in design and publishing to show how a layout will look before real content exists. It is scrambled Latin adapted from a work by the Roman writer Cicero, so it does not distract from the design.

Frequently asked questions

Is lorem ipsum real Latin?

It comes from real Latin text, a passage of Cicero's On the Ends of Good and Evil from 45 BC, but it has been altered and scrambled so it does not read as meaningful Latin.

Why use placeholder text at all?

Readable real text pulls attention to the words. Neutral filler lets people judge the layout, fonts and spacing.

Should I leave lorem ipsum on a live site?

No. Replace it before publishing. Placeholder text looks unfinished to visitors and gives search engines nothing useful to read.

Is the text different every time?

Yes. Each press of Generate again makes new random sentences from the same word list.

Can I get HTML?
