AI search visibility

Get cited in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.

The short answer

AI search visibility is the practice of making your content easy for AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) to find, understand and cite. It builds on normal SEO: pages that already rank well are the ones most often cited.

Why it matters

More searches now end on an AI-written answer. SparkToro measured about 68% of US Google searches ending without a click in early 2026, and studies of AI Overviews report click-through falling on the pages they appear above, though the studies disagree on how much.

Visitors who do arrive from AI answers tend to be well informed. Adobe reported AI-referred retail visits converting better than other traffic, but these figures come from vendors and change quickly.

No single AI platform dominates. ChatGPT's share of AI chatbot traffic fell over a year while Gemini's rose, so a strategy built for one engine can age fast.

What to do today

  1. 1

Put a direct, one or two sentence answer under each question-style heading, then expand below it.

  2. 2

Keep important text in plain HTML that is visible without JavaScript. Check this with the Meta Tag Checker.

  3. 3

Show a real update date and cite primary sources, as the pages on this site do.

  4. 4

Make sure AI search crawlers are allowed in your robots.txt. See AI crawler control.

  5. 5

Keep ranking well in normal search. In one study the strongest predictor of an AI citation was the page's Google position.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between GEO and AEO?

Both mean optimising to appear in AI-generated answers. GEO (generative engine optimization) usually refers to being cited by AI engines. AEO (answer engine optimization) is the older term for earning direct answers, such as featured snippets and voice answers. In practice the work overlaps.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. AI answers lean heavily on pages that already rank and on trusted sources. Good SEO is still the foundation.

Can I track whether AI engines mention my brand?

Paid AI-visibility tools exist, and the market raised large sums in 2025 and 2026. A free tester is on our roadmap. Until then you can ask AI assistants a fixed list of questions and record the answers each month.

Should I add an llms.txt file?

An independent study of about 300,000 domains found only around one in ten used llms.txt and no link to AI citations, so it is not a priority.
